CSCS card guide
CSCS card guide: all types, costs and how to apply
A complete reference for UK construction workers. Every CSCS card colour explained, what each one costs, how to apply, and what employers check at the gate.
Quick answer
Most workers on UK construction sites need a CSCS card — it is required by the majority of principal contractors for site access. There is no single CSCS card: the colour and type must match your role and qualification level.
Timeline: 7 to 21 days from passing your CITB test to card in hand. Faster if NVQ evidence is already complete.
Cost: £22.50 CITB test + £36 card fee = approximately £58–70 for most workers.
Watch out: Applying for the wrong card type for your role is the most common cause of delays and rejected applications.
Step-by-step guide
1. Confirm your card type
Match your role, qualification level, and employer's requirements to the correct card colour. Applying for the wrong level is the most common cause of rejections.
2. Pass the CITB HSE test
Book and pass the relevant test version for your card level. Your pass certificate must be dated within the last 2 years at the point of application.
3. Confirm your qualification evidence
Have your NVQ certificate, apprenticeship completion record, or professional membership details ready. Name and date of birth must match your photo ID exactly.
4. Apply online at cscs.uk.com
You will need: CITB test pass reference number, qualification details and certificate number, a digital passport-style photo, and a payment card.
5. Track your application
Online applications take approximately 5–10 working days. Your card is sent to your registered address.
6. Upload to SubbHubb
Photograph front and back and upload to your profile. Your Site Passport updates automatically.

What employers usually check
- Card colour matches the role being offered
- Card is in date or a verifiable renewal is in progress
- CITB test is current where required for the card type
- Name and details match the worker's photo ID and induction form
- Card has not been reported lost or revoked
Common mistakes
- Applying for the wrong card colour for the role
- CITB test certificate expired before the card application was submitted (the test is only valid for 2 years — the most common silent blocker)
- Name on qualification certificate does not exactly match photo ID
- Assuming a previous card automatically renews to the same colour — a role change or qualification gain may require a different card
- Paying for an NVQ course not required for the specific card route
- Applying before NVQ assessment is fully signed off and certificated

Is CSCS a legal requirement in the UK?
CSCS is not required by law, but the majority of principal contractors make it a contractual condition of site access. In practice, most workers need one to find consistent site work.
Can I work on site without a CSCS card?
Some smaller sites and domestic projects do not require CSCS. Any work involving a main or principal contractor will almost certainly require it. Check the job advert and confirm with the employer before travelling to site.
What is the difference between CSCS, CPCS, ECS, CISRS, and IPAF?
CSCS covers general and trade roles. CPCS is for plant operators, CISRS for scaffolders, ECS for electricians, IPAF for powered access. Each covers a specific area of the industry. Some roles require more than one card.
How do I know which card colour I need?
Use the SubbHubb requirements checker or the CSCS card finder at cscs.uk.com. Both match your occupation and qualification level to the correct card type.
Can I hold more than one CSCS card?
No. You hold one card at a time. It reflects your highest qualification level and current role. Gaining further qualifications means applying for the appropriate new card.
How long does it take to get a CSCS card for the first time?
From passing your CITB test to card arriving: typically 7–14 working days, assuming qualification evidence is complete and correct.
What do I do if my card is lost or stolen?
Report it to CSCS immediately and apply for a replacement. Keep your card number and expiry date stored in your SubbHubb profile so you always have the details to hand.
What if my qualification is from outside the UK?
CSCS can accept certain international qualifications assessed as equivalent to UK standards. Contact CSCS directly for guidance before applying.
