Fair points. Ours does touch on crane movements which is genuinely useful given we've got two cranes active. I think I was annoyed more by the delivery than the concept.
When done properly they're genuinely useful — you can highlight lifting operations happening nearby, crane movements, hot works, changes to traffic routes. On busy sites lives have literally been saved by a morning brief about a crane lift. The bad ones are just formality but don't dismiss the format because of lazy SMs.
The SM absolutely needs them on record from an insurance and legal standpoint. If something goes wrong and he can't show daily pre-task briefings happened, he's in trouble. So yes, partly box ticking, but box ticking that exists for a reason.
The best SMs I've worked for keep it to 5 minutes max and only cover things that are actually different from yesterday. If yesterday's brief still applies, reference it and move on. Fifteen minutes every single day for the same thing is just padding.
